Gaming adaptations are the latest trend in television and cinema. After the grand success of Last of Us, Edgerunners, Arcane, and Castlevania, the transition of gaming stories and worlds into other media is at an all-time high. The latest entry in the long list of upcoming gaming adaptations is the indie sensation of 2022, Vampire Survivors.

This roguelike game became a trend last year. From casual gamers to gaming streamers, everyone was hopping on this trend. Cashing in on the game’s popularity, LA-based studio, Story Kitchen has joined forces with the game’s creator, Luca Galante, to adapt the game into a comedic gothic animated television series.

While both Vampire Survivors and Castlevania are drastically different from each other in terms of gameplay, with a single glance at Vampire Survivors’ art style, one can deduce where the inspiration for it came from. This game even features re-used assets from Castlevania games. With so much similarity in terms of source material, many fans are concerned that the show may become a clone of the hit Castlevania TV series.

In the history of video games, Castlevania is a legendary name. As a tribute to the influential platformer, Netflix adapted the franchise into a four-season television series. It is one of the best gaming adaptations of all time and a “love letter” to the classic gaming icon.

Vampire Survivors is very aware of its similarity with Castlevania. It even states in the description that it is a combination of Vox Machina and Castlevania. The story of the game is: “There lived an evil person named Bisconte Draculó, whose many evil magics created a bad world filled with famine and suffering. It’s now up to the members of the Belpaese Family to end his reign of terror and return good food to the table.”

Clearly, the setting is a mirror of Castlevania, with Bisconte Draculó exchanging Dracula and Belpaese imitating the Belmonts. But looking at the exotic cast and characters of the game and “the bombastic gothic world,” it is expected that VS may deliver something very different from the Castlevania show. But so far, we can say nothing for sure.
