The Japanese game developers released Animal Crossing: New Horizons in 2020. This game became a colossal hit among the fans for its elite social simulation experience. Further, this game came out around during the global pandemic, which also affected the game’s popularity.
New Horizons served as a platform for many people to host social gatherings as it was impossible to host in real life because of the pandemic. Further, Nintendo has sold over 39.38 million copies of New Horizons by June 2022, the second most successful Nintendo Switch game. But it might soon lose this title.
Splatoon 3 is a threat to Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Splatoon 3 is the upcoming third-person game that will release on September 9, 2022. Recently at the Splatoon 3 Direct, the developers revealed more about the game. It would feature similar gameplay to its predecessor Splatoon 2, but with better visuals and game mechanics.

However, one fascinating point in the Direct event was the developers’ plans for the game’s future. Nintendo revealed that Splatoon 3 would have a new catalog in the game after every three months. Moreover, there would be weekly updates for fans to enjoy. The developers promised they had two years’ worth of content planned for the game.
Undoubtedly, Splatoon 3 sounds so fascinating already and would harm games like Animal Crossing’s popularity. Animal Crossing: New Horizons have been around for over two years, and it’s one of the most favorites. But the developers haven’t introduced a lot of new catalogs for it after the release. What kept the game going was the fans’ creativity.
If New Horizons had well-thought plans like Splatoon 3, no other game could have competed against this social-simulation game. However, a significant reason for not being able to develop such a plan was the pandemic. Undoubtedly, it would be hard for the developers to plan such a schedule for the game’s future from their homes.
