The most trending topic all over the internet is the ongoing HBO seriesThe Last of Us. It is the adaptation of the 2013-released action-adventure game of the same name. This PlayStation title bagged multiple “Game of the Year” awards when it was released. Now, the ongoing series is also a major hit like its original source.

Everyone is praising the show for the performance of the actors and directors. But what made “The Last of Us” such a big hit is the interesting plot. The story of this 2013-released game revolves around a post-apocalyptic world that was ravaged by the spread of the parasitic Cordyceps fungus.

In the game and series, this fungus has evolved and is capable of infecting humans into zombie-like creatures, who attack other people to spread the fungus further. Many might think it’s a made-up virus for the game. However, Cordyceps is a real-world virus. Recently, the UFC podcaster Joe Rogan also discussed on this topic with American mycologist Paul Stamets.

Joe Rogan talks about “The Last of Us” fungus’ use in sports

According to “The Last of Us,” Cordyceps affect a person’s mind and make them attack others to spread it even further. This fungus acts similarly in the real world too. It usually affects ants and then they spread it in their colonies. The spread of a Cordyceps fungus can wipe out an entire colony of ants in a few days.

However, many might not know that it is a popular natural supplement among athletes. Joe Rogan brought up the topic of the benefits of consuming Cordyceps in his recent podcast. He even said that this fungus was once used in the Olympics, which prompted the foundation of many fungus-based sports supplement brands.

The UFC podcaster wasn’t wrong about this information as the Chinese athletes used Cordyceps in the 1993 Olympics and achieved great results. But many initially doubted them for using some performance-enhancing steroids. The Chinese team also had to undergo investigation, but the results for consuming steroids were zero.
