The French game studio Ubisoft has come under fire from fans. A user reported getting a mail from the game studio, which notified them about the account closure due to inactivity. This caused a mass frenzy among the fans who were worried about their purchased games.

Now the game studio has come forward to clear the air on the debacle. They have tried to de-escalate the situation by mentioning their reasons for that mail. But it looks like it won’t be enough to satisfy some skeptical fans, with some suggesting to Ubisoft not to delete accounts at all.

While Ubisoft acknowledged that the email received by the user was genuine, the context provided by the user was incorrect. The user claimed that “You will lose all your games purchased forever.” However, the game studio has stated to IGN in a mail that this is not true. They claim that the process of eliminating inactive accounts has been going on for years.

The Assassin’s Creed creators claimed the removal of accounts is by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules for the retention of personal information. However, the studio does not delete the accounts based on inactivity only.

Ubisoft has a set of parameters for selecting accounts for deletion. They take into account the gaming activity of the user along with the duration of inactivity for the account. They currently consider deleting those accounts that have been inactive for more than 4 years.

But being inactive for more than 4 years does not mean that the user’s account will be deleted. Having purchased PC games from the account or having an active subscription automatically exempts the account from deletion.
