But before trying the upcoming Scarlet and Violet, fans should try the older games. The first game of the series came out back in 1996. Since then, many more titles have been added to the Pokemon franchise. So, we have narrowed it down to the top five titles from the series that you should try before jumping into the latest ones in the series.
X and Y
Nintendo released two new additions, X and Y, to the Pokemon franchise in 2013. This role-playing game was released for the then console, Nintendo 3DS. Unlike past games, it featured polygonal 3D graphics. Further, these two additions got attention for the much-talked feature Mega Evolution, a temporary boost for the Pokemon. A new Pokemon type, Fairy-type, was introduced in this sixth-generation game.
X and Y are set in the Kalos region, where players take on the role of a young trainer aiming for the Pokemon Champion title. This game not only featured new forms for classic Pokemon but also introduced 72 new pocket monsters. Further, like every installment, the significant difference between both games was their main legendary; X had Xerneas while Y had Yveltal.
These two additions became the most successful games on Nintendo 3DS after Mario Kart 7. It was the second-best-selling video game on 3DS, with over 16.62 million copies sold.
HeartGold and SoulSilver
Pokemon Gold and Silver are one of the best games in the fan-favorite franchise. So, Nintendo remade this second-generation game for Nintendo DS on the 10th anniversary of the original Gold and Silver.
This 2019 remake had similar game mechanics to the original but featured new advanced graphics. However, there were some changes, like the first Pokemon in the party can now follow the player.
HeartGold and SoulSilver take players on a journey through Joto, where the player aims to become the Champion. The player also has to defeat the evil organization, Team Rocket. Further, the main legendaries in this game depend on which version the player is playing. HeartGold features Ho-Oh, while SoulSilver has Lugia. Players can also visit the Kanto region in this game and eventually fight the strongest Trainer Red on top of Mt. Silver.
Platinum
Pokemon is usually known for releasing two versions of a game. But the Sinnoh-based games were among the rare ones to get the third game. It is the fourth-generation game released in 2009 globally for the Nintendo DS console. This game featured similar visuals and mechanics to Diamon and Pearl. However, it featured more Pocket Monsters than the first two Sinnoh games. Further, it had a new area to explore called the Distortion World.
Like every other Pokemon game, it also had a similar plot to explore the Sinnoh region and defeat gyms and the League to become the new champion. Further, the player also takes on a new evil organization, Team Galactic, who has summoned the legendary Dragon-type Giratina. Platinum became one of the favorite Sinnoh games, so fans would have loved to get a remake like Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl got.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
The third-generation Pokemon games for the Game Boy Advance were among the most-played Pokemon games. So, Nintendo remade Ruby and Sapphire in 2014 for the 3DS console. Fans were delighted to see their favorite Pokemon game in a new form. This 2014 remade had the same visuals as the sixth-generation titles, X and Y.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire feature the same story as the original two games. Moreover, the evil organization and the main legendary Pokemon, the player faces, depending on the version, like Omega Ruby would have team Magma and Groudon, while Alpha Sapphire would have Kyogre and Team Aqua. Also, the most interesting feature of this remake was it featured Mega Evolution and ‘Primal Form; for the in-game legendaries.
FireRed and LeafGreen
The best game in the series has to be the original Pokemon Red and Green, which was released in 1996. It’s been over 26 years since these two games came out. However, many new players might not like playing the black-and-white game. But there is nothing to worry about as there are two remakes for these classics, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, which came out in 2004 for Game Boy Advance.
