Fans of the hit online word game ‘Wordle’ have had an interesting week. Developed by Josh Wardle for his partner, the game soon exploded into popularity, as it has gone from just the two of them playing to over thousands of people playing matter since its inception.
However, fans of the game have seen a roller coaster of emotions. Unhappy with the acquisition of the free-to-play game by NYT, fans have been making their voices heard. But, conversely, a huge section of fans are discovering the game for the first time because of news of the acquisition.
This is why the fanbase is seeing amusing experiments like how the Game Boy can run the game.

Nintendo: Wordle runs on Game Boy
In a tweet by user stacksmashing on Twitter, the popular word game is seen running on Nintendo’s handheld device. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that is not how the game’s creator Josh Wardle envisioned it being played. Despite that, the meteoric rise in its popularity has resulted in many such experimentations with the internet’s latest favorite pastime.
However, it’s not a perfect recreation of the web game. Because of the limited ROM size of the handheld, stacksmashing could not fit in a huge list of words. Instead, they opted to use a bloom filter, which by their own admission has a very high error rate, when it comes to determining if an entered word is one of the 8000 most common English words.

“This is terrific,” says one fan before sharing an error associated with the game running on Game Boy.
This is terrific. FYI ran into an error when guessing double of a letter when only one of that letter is in the word.

On the whole, people seem to be enjoying and taking inspiration from the DIY.
And now it’s running on Super Game Boy 2!
I even made a palette that will make it look a little more like the original. Use this code on the custom palette screen:

stacksmashing has given credit to Huxley Dunsany on Twitter for serving as the inspiration for this build. Dunsany recently got Wordle running on a Palm VII digital assistant.
