Joel in The Last of Us is a very strong character. Characters who start their journey by losing everything are often strong. He first lost his daughter, then he lost his partner and now he has to travel across the country with a person who is slowly becoming more and more important to him.
Ellie is equally strong, if not stronger. She lost most people that she knew; she saw them die in front of her, in horrific ways. Life has given her a bag full of sad memories and a long way to walk with it.

The scene in question was when Ellie confronts Joel about sending her ahead with Tommy. They talk about loss and they talk about the pain of losing someone. Joel thinks his pain is worse, while Ellie thinks of her own pain as worse. This makes up for a very captivating scene.

The makers mention that they decided to keep that scene as it is from the game. Because that scene defines the relationship they are in process of forming. And it is an important moment, they also mention that they let Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey act out that scene the way they wanted.

Neil Druckmann specifically mentioned, “I didn’t envy them sort of trying to, like, do a scene that, like, exists in the game, and it was like seared into people’s mind. And they made it their own, and it’s just as beautiful.”
And the result as we all saw was outstanding. The fact that Joel fears not for his own life but hers is clear on his face and Ellie’s discomfort with leaving Joel behind is evident on her face too.
This just goes to show how much these actors understood these characters. Fans of the original game should appreciate the fact that these actors did not see that game as just a game, but as a heartfelt story of human relations.
