Companies often say stuff that they either forget to hold on to or that they have to let go of due to a change in circumstances. EA’s statement about single-player games and Ubisoft’s interest in NFTs come to mind. But even Nintendo is not sacred when it comes to such statements.

Nintendo’s stance on the FMV game Night Trap

Many old-school gamers might remember Night Trap and all the fuss that the game caused when it first launched. It launched back then on Sega’s platform and caused a nationwide scuffle in the USA. A United States Senate committee set up a hearing about the same, during which Nintendo of America president Howard Lincoln specifically said “Night Trap will never appear on a Nintendo system”.

The game was then launched digitally and physically on the Nintendo Switch. Yes, that happened years later, yet it shows how Nintendo has changed its approach to gaming over the years.

Nintendo Switch and friend codes

Over the years, Nintendo systems have been making gamers use friend codes in order to add people to their friend lists. It’s not a very good system, to be fair; it makes adding friends very easy in many ways, but some fans did not like this dated method of adding friends.

Leading up to the launch of Nintendo Switch, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime mentioned that Nintendo Switch would not have anything to do with friend codes. People took it as a hint that Nintendo was adding some new methods of being social on this console. But when the console itself launched, it retained the friend code method nevertheless.

Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo

In 2011, mobile gaming was on the rise, and most companies were bringing their popular franchises to mobile in some way or another. During that time, someone asked then-Nintendo president Satoru Iwata if Nintendo had any plans to do so. He simply said, “If we did that, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo”.

It made sense too; Iwata was a passionate person, and he respected the company that he had created bit by bit alongside his co-workers such as Miyamoto, etc.

But due to rising pressures, Nintendo had to curb their efforts and bring some of their games to Mobile.

Of course, many companies often make claims that they later cannot stand by. But if a company continues to deliver excellent gaming experiences, people should learn to look past these things and focus on the games that they offer.
