The biggest day in the video game industry, The Game Awards 2023, is inching closer. There have been many huge nominations across various categories this year. With the amount of stellar releases this year, the Game of the Year list was heavily debated.
While some rejoiced that their favorite games secured nominations, many fans got upset about their favored games being left out. And they have blamed the jury for most of it. However, there is still a chance their favorite game can win in one category. And this time, the jury will play no role in selecting the winner of this category.

In a recent tweet, Geoff Keighley revealed yet another category coming to TGA 2023. He acknowledged 2023 has been a great year for gaming. Following this, he shared his thoughts on games not getting nominated. “I wish we could get past the rhetoric that a game not nominated in a category is unworthy or bad. It simply didn’t make the cutoff in a highly competitive year,” he said. However, to respect the feelings of the fans, he brought forth a category fully voted by fans.
We will have our Players' Voice category coming up later this month too — where you'll get to 100% decide a winner from 30 nominees. Stay tuned for details.

A lot of players have been asking questions following the release of the list of nominees, particularly for this year’s Game of the Year. While games like Alan Wake 2 and Spider-Man 2 found a spot on the list, many were also expecting Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy, neither of which made the list. Now, there will be a new category, as stated by Geoff Keighley, called the Players’ Voice category.
Currently, the nominees are picked by the juries for various categories. After nominations, the winner is picked by 90% votes from juries and 10% voting from fans. However, in the Players Voice category, there will be 30 nominees, and the winner will be picked solely through fan votes.
Fans have taken this announcement with a bittersweet reaction. While some fans are eager to vote for their favorite game, some are complaining this should be the method for all categories in The Game Awards 2023.
Netizens not entirely happy about the new category
The announcement from Geoff Keighley for the category has received mixed reactions from the public. But demands for all nominations via player vote are getting stronger. A fan said, “That’s the issue. You people pick the nominations when we are the ones who know there are far more games out there that you never show because they simply aren’t worth your time.”
How about you let the players vote for all the nominations? Bc these 120 “professional” outlets don’t know what they are doing.

Another fan demanded they have multiple categories for players’ choice awards. Fans are calling this a popularity contest for which game has the most insane fanbase. And a fan has already declared their winner.
Hey Geoff is it possible to have a few categories for players choice. So we have the official
Media outlets vote and then the players vote. It’d be a really nice contrast and a first for the industry 🙂— Chrono got Triggered (@HondaFirefox) November 18, 2023
