When PlayStation released the Ghost of Tsushima back in 2020, it was an instant success. With some perfect scores coming from critics, this game was a new take on history-based games. The studio kept the game in an open-world environment, giving fans a space to explore.

Now, with the sequel reportedly missing out on the PS Showcase 2023, the Gamology YouTube channel thought it would be great to examine the facts of the first title by a historian. The Sucker Punch title passed this examination with flying colors, getting the Japanese historian’s stamp of originality.

In their latest YouTube video, the game was examined by Michael Crandol, who specializes in Japanese horror films, and the mythology of Japan. Starting off, he praised the art style of the characters. The looks of all characters were accurate to the roles they played and did not look like fantasy armor.

Talking more about the enemies in the game, he told Mongols tried to invade Japan twice. Although they failed to capture the mainland of Japan, they did manage to win the island of Tsushima. This, according to him, pointed out the grim ending which may be coming in the later titles.

Although, he did point out that the game used Samurai freely. There were no Samurai in this era, just Warriors. Crandol pointed out that Warriors in this era did not have many codes of conduct like Samurais.

The main goal for Warriors in this era was to win the battle no matter what way possible. There was also no Samurai Honor code mentioned in the game in this time period. “There’s a lot of emphasis on Honor in this game,” Crandol said.

But he really applauded the fighting direction of the game. He praised the game for keeping fights realistic and cruel. “Than some of the other Japanese-themed games that we’ve looked at here this really seems to be kind of going for realism to the battles,” Crandol said.
