The Sims is one of the best gaming franchises of all time, selling 200 million copies worldwide. This life simulation series was developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. Right now, the whole world is buzzing with excitement regarding the latest installment of this series: The Sims 5.

EA confirms that The Sims 5 will be free to play

To jump into the simulation world of The Sims 5, you don’t have to spend a single penny. Yes, you read it right! EA has officially announced that this game is going to be free to download. EA has also announced that the next-gen Sims, officially codenamed Project Rene, is going to support both solo and multiplayer gameplay. Although it was initially predicted that the game was going to be free to play, thanks to a job posting published online this summer, In that post, this game was described as a free game. However, later on, that post was scrapped.

Now, Lyndsay Pearson, the VP of franchise creative for the Sims at developer Maxis Studios, confirmed: “We intend for Project Rene to be free to download, and that means that when it’s ready and fully open to our players, you’ll be able to join and play and explore Project Rene without a subscription, without core game purchase or energy mechanics.”

The game was announced last year in October, is currently in the development phase, and will take a while to release as of now. Pearson also elaborated on the development phase. She stated that the team is developing the game in different ways. The game will also have different phases of development. from small public tests to large-scale early access options.

But one thing that will give fans a buzz is that Pearson assured them that Project René is ready. But there is a catch. The launch product won’t be as fully featured as its predecessor, The Sims 4. The main reason for this is that The Sims 4 has received a significant amount of updates and expansions since its release in 2014.

Another exciting part is that Project Renne and The Sims 4 will coexist side by side. Pearson stated: “We plan to support both at the same time, and we’re going to continue to bring even more exciting content to The Sims 4 for the foreseeable future.”

As things stand, it is going to be a treat for all the Sims fans out there. Project Renne is going to feature multiplayer as well, which is first in its segment. Sims 4 had already become free to play at the time of 5’s announcement. Now, the VP herself has confirmed that The Sims 5 will be free to play. And last but not least, both of the games are going to coexist, with assured future updates to the former.
