Nintendo was once the market leader when it came to selling video game consoles. Fans did not go for anything other than the consoles by the Japanese giant. And these rarely ever disappointed them. With such popularity, everything Nintendo wanted, would eventually happen. They chose third-party developers very carefully; not every game was allowed on their consoles, and they also controlled a major part of the cartridge development process.

One thing they could not control, though, was cheating, which became a huge thing, back in the Game Boy days. And it was not very hard for gamers to cheat either, all they had to do was get their hands on a specialized cart called the Game Genie.

This cart would then activate a cheat menu in the game, and the players would then be able to change a number of things in that game. From giving themselves more lives to making levels faster or slower depending on their preferences.

Sometimes these even allowed players to skip whole levels altogether, which in itself was a big deal. The process of its usage was recently shown by a Youtuber called 1980sGamer. Surprisingly, the guy still has his game genie and its cheat booklet handy!

Every Game Genie came with a little booklet with a list of games and cheat codes related to them written below. All players had to do was insert the game genie in a console’s cart slot, then insert the game cart in the game genie, use the code they wanted, and they were done.

As had been said before, Nintendo tried its best to control this, but it never succeeded. Eventually, the Game Genie stopped developing new carts and was never heard of again. But the legacy it created with numerous Nintendo players cannot be forgotten.
