With every generation of console, PlayStation usually releases alternative variants during the course of its life. This can be seen with the PS3 Slim and PS4 Pro. Now, a few years into the life of the PS5, Sony is working on a lighter and more efficient version of the console. Sony is focusing on making major improvements in the form of a 6nm chip and a sleek new design.
While the rest of the world is still relatively in the dark with regards to news about this new model, a Japanese retailer has already listed the console. A Japanese product manual even showcases the differences in hardware used in this new model. The main difference between this model and the original is in their weight.
The new PS5 6nm will weigh 3.6kg, which is 300g less than the original. This is due to the revised design PlayStation has used to attach the console’s stand.

Will PlayStation be able to keep up with the immense demand for its console?
PlayStation and Xbox have both faced problems when it comes to keeping up with the demand for their new consoles. Thus, it is no surprise that Sony is looking at an alternative design and components to build the system. During an investor call, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki made the company’s intentions clear.

He said “we’re aiming for more sales volume than the PS4 [during year 2]. But can we drastically increase the supply? No, that’s not likely.” Totoki further explained that “The shortage of semiconductors is one factor, but there are other factors that will impact on the production volume. So, at present, we’d like to aim at [beating] second year sales of 14.8 million, which was the second year of PS4.”
Since this console had already been listed by some Japanese retailers, it is likely that Sony has begun the development and testing of this system. It should only be a matter of time before fans can get their hands on the new and improved PS5.
