A new Mass Effect has been rumored for a long time and some recent developments may bring smiles to long-time fans. Mass Effect: Andromeda took a jab at going open-world, but the results didn’t impress the fans all that much. The last title in the franchise wasn’t entirely open-world to be fair: you couldn’t just roam around anywhere and interact with anyone.
However, fans criticized the move by the devs and said a linear narrative would have been better for the game. It looks like BioWare finally took notice of the community requests as an industry insider has claimed that the next Mass Effect title may ditch the open-world settings to go back to the single-player format.

New Mass Effect finally in the works?
BioWare’s Mass Effect is a military sci-fi franchise that is one of the most popular shooters out there. While the earlier titles helped to garner a lot of fan following and appreciation the last entry to the series left a bitter experience among the community. The devs failed to make Mass Effect: Andromeda a good open-world game. Andromeda also deviated from the original trilogy and some of the most basic features were left out from the title. Despite its poor reception, BioWare announced in 2020 that they will work on a new Mass Effect game, rumored to be titled Mass Effect 4.
An industry insider revealed in a recent YouTube podcast, while talking about Starfield, that rumors about a new Mass Effect may be true. While the speaker didn’t confirm anything, fans were quick to latch on to the statement.
On the Xbox Two Podcast, Jez Corden was heard saying, “I have heard that Mass Effect is ditching open-world to go back to its classic format. I don’t know if that’s accurate 100 percent, but it is an interesting rumor.”
Mass Effect remains a cult favorite
The original Mass Effect trilogy followed a structure where several “hubs” were connected by linear corridors. This also offered players the opportunity to decide how they wish to take on the missions in the game. While the games were mostly linear in nature, a large number of hidden areas and POIs made it seem like the maps were bigger than they actually were.

Traversing the Milky Way Galaxy, players often stumbled upon unexpected areas that offered lumpsum prizes. While this galaxy was the center of all action for the previous Mass Effect games, it’s expected that the new title may expand its horizons beyond the Milky Way.
