HBO’s The Last of Us is possibly one of the best TV series released this year. It retells the plot of 2013’s Game of the Year with the same name. This post-apocalyptic TV series was praised not only by aficionados of the original video game but also by others who had never played any of The Last of Us games.

Because of the immense popularity of this post-apocalyptic show, fans are eagerly waiting for the second season. The Last of Us Season 2 will be based on the second installment of the game. But there are speculations that there might be some changes. Even the showrunners mentioned there might be certain diversions in the plot from the source, especially when it is about Joel.

Craig Mazin hints at Joel’s fate in The Last of Us Season 2

The first season ended with him choosing Ellie’s life over saving the entire humanity. But in the process, Joel killed almost all the Fireflies in the hospital, including Marlene. But the death that will haunt him in Season 2 would be the doctor who was supposed to operate on Ellie. In the game, the doctor’s daughter Abby kills Joel to avenge her father’s death.

The fans who played the second game were not pleased about Joel’s death, as they were close to the character. Similarly, fans have also grown close to Joel and feared his fate in Season 2. Recently, the show’s co-director Craig Mazin was asked about Joel’s fate. But the director claimed he doesn’t care about killing characters but also isn’t limited to the original source.

“This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters,” Mazin reported to ComicBook. “But the important thing to note is that neither Neil [Druckmann, the co-creator of the show and creator of the original game] nor I feel constrained by the source material.”

We have already seen the showrunners introduce some drastic changes in the plot, like replacing spores with tendrils. They also changed Henry and Sam’s characteristics. So it won’t be surprising if they change Joel’s fate in the game. But what would be interesting is how it will affect the story. After all, the second game’s plot heavily depended on his death.
