Need for Speed is a racing game franchise published by Electronic Arts and currently developed by Criterion Games, the developers of Burnout. The series mainly focuses on illicit street racing and missions. Along with that, the players have to also actively run from the pursuing law enforcement and police to complete tasks.
This nature of the game permits an edgy marketing strategy that tries to tap into the market of thrill-seeking teenagers and young adults. But this time around, the self-awareness and edginess of the social media marketing team went a little far and enraged a part of the internet.
The battle between Need For Speed and an individual
On November 21, 2022, the official Twitter page of Need for Speed posted a tweet promoting their upcoming game, NFS: Unbound. In the tweet, they shared their latest pre-order offer where the users can get a free three-day early access to one of the maps in the game if they pre-ordered immediately. But not everything went according to plan after that.

One of the players @KyloZen0 replied to the tweet saying, “Hold on – what did we ask for and what did you listen to, exactly? To pay more to get 3 days early access?” The player asked a genuine question, expressing their doubts, but the response wasn’t what he had expected.
The NFS account replied, “Gameplay Video…? 3 Day Early Access was always there, reading is fundamental” trying to shut down the user with a sarcastic jab. But Kylo didn’t stop there, they also replied, “Ah right – charging extra to your loyal fan base to play 3 days early isn’t really cool and a bit exploitative, customer relations is fundamental.”
I’m not reading all that, sorry that happened to you or congratulations

And so on, the bickering between the player and the game studio continued on. They insulted each other and tried their best to shut each other. As Kylo continued to rain criticisms on the company, the NFS account, in the end, dismissed the whole conversation and said, “I’m not reading all that, sorry that happened to you or congratulations”.
How did fans react to this tweet interaction?
The interaction was so out of hand that even the fans couldn’t stop from getting involved in it. The community poured into the tweet’s reply section, waging a small war between themselves. Some were supporting the gaming company and others were pointing out how unprofessional the social media team’s behavior was.
