The internet’s latest fixation, the wildly popular word game, Wordle, is taking over everyone’s screens rapidly. The word-guessing game has recently become the center of attraction for the world, especially among puzzle-solvers, gamers, and vocabulary enthusiasts, because of its catchy and inquisitive game design.
Interestingly, the turning of the tide from other video games to a simple yet engaging word game resulted in another surprising acquisition. On February 1, 2022, The New York Times Company purchased Wordle from its sole creator/developer. And if there are any mysteries unsolved about Wordle, you can find the answers to those here.

How was Wordle created?
In the past few days, people all across the world, including famous internet personalities, have been entirely preoccupied guessing the word of the day, garnering millions of users for Wordle. But barring a few curious readers, few would know how the popular game came to life.
Wordle was developed by a software engineer for their partner years ago. The creator, since the development of the first model, has had several iterations of the game before launching the game on public servers in late 2021.
When was Wordle invented?
The developer originally designed and implemented the very first version of the game in 2013. However, it was, presumably, vastly different from its latest edition. The game ultimately came to life in the recent pandemic times, officially launching in October 2021.

Surprisingly, the game recorded close to 90 users in the following month after its launch, which is now in the millions, as per the New York Times announcement. To give readers an accurate figure, the developer claims the number is close to 3 million users, resulting in an Among Us-like phase across the gaming industry, with streamers and various other entities playing the game on a regular basis.

Although the game, their concepts, and designs are entirely different from each other, the sudden popularity and remarkable reception are on the same trajectory.
Who came up with Wordle?
The online puzzle game, as mentioned, was developed by software engineer Josh Wardle for his spouse, Palak Shah. Wardle created the game for his wife, who is a huge fan of games based on words and puzzles. He created the game, keeping in mind Shah’s love of words; Shah is also a fan of the Times’s crossword puzzle and Spelling Bee, as per People.com.
As for Wordle’s current state, the game joined The New York Times Games as of January 2022, after the publisher revealed the massive deal. Wordle is now joining The Mini crossword, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, Tiles, Vertex, and others on Times’s established roster of word/puzzle titles.

The New York Times purchased Wordle “for an undisclosed price in the low-seven figures.” The price is undoubtedly more than what Josh Wardle expected. Given he had no intentions of making a viral game, that could become a source of monetary gain.
Despite Wardle selling his game to a large publisher, his name will forever be synonymous with the game. Well, more so because the name “Wordle” is Josh Wardle’s play on the word that is his surname.
