Video games have come a long way since they were first revealed to the world several decades ago. While the early titles weren’t too demanding when it came to requiring massive horsepower, things have changed drastically in today’s time. Nowadays, the more powerful the device, the better. That way, one can end up getting the best possible experience in immersing into a title’s virtual world. And when it comes to running the most graphic-intensive games, there’s hardly a better choice than the currently available PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X/S models.
In other words, these are the flagship consoles one can own in order to receive the ultimate level of experience. Interestingly, though, recent rumors of these devices receiving additional upgrades in the future have made gaming enthusiasts concerned.
While some people believe that something like a PS5 Pro or the Xbox Series XL would be amazing to have, there are folks who think the current generation is still not actually used to its full capacity. And thus, the big question that arises is: are the developers not using the newest consoles to their real potential?

Is having a PS5 Pro or Xbox Series XL too important right now?
There’s no doubt about the fact that the ongoing platforms from Sony and Microsoft are some of the most advanced machines one can afford in 2023. Plus, they nearly arrived at the same time in 2020, and are yet to see a depreciation in their age. So one can say they are not that old, compared to their siblings from the previous generations, like the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
However, there’s an ongoing debate going on right now among video game lovers regarding the present generation. The majority of them also believe that the current models of the PlayStation and the Xbox should not get any new upgrades. That’s because it’s too early to receive another version of these consoles, which were released less than three years ago.
An industry insider, Tom Henderson, recently took to Twitter to know the stance of people on the topic of having mid-gen upgrades for PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S.
Curious to know what developers think of a PS5 Pro / Xbox Series XL.
People who are not devs usually say "Devs haven't utilized the current generation yet". Is this true? Would you welcome a mid-gen upgrade or are they just not needed? Would mid-gen upgrades cause issues? etc.

Coming as no surprise, many individuals expressed a distaste for any kind of upgrade for the ongoing consoles. According to them, the overall strength and potential of the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X/S is yet to be utilized. In fact, some of them also wrote that the devs working on big AAA titles are failing to actually properly optimize their games. As a result, the titles released nowadays are either unfinished or are having issues even on the latest devices. In other words, the fault is not in the platforms but in the games themselves.
What’s the point of mid gen upgrades when games are constantly coming out buggy and under performing with its hardware
— Teddy (@Lunar_Deal) May 6, 2023
Games are buggy and underperforming because the games are not getting tested enough and often the performance optimizations that normally happen at the end of development cycles are getting delayed for after release

I just don’t see why it’s necessary yet. Remove COVID years and this console gen has been under utilized. My opinion at least, not a lot of exclusives yet

I can’t see what they could really add currently? Also games still being supported on ps4 means we aren’t getting the most out of the ps5 games as they have to work on both systems

Then there are those who believe that rolling out new upgrades would cause frustration among those who already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S model. Because they will feel that their consoles have aged way too early despite coming out just a few years ago.
These consoles came out in 2020 and the ps5 shortage just ended in late 2022. Im all for an upgrade but it’s definitely gonna cause an uproar for a lot of people.

Mid-gen upgrades not only are not needed, they would simply cause even more frustration for fans amidst this endemic problem we face with unoptimized games being released constantly.

2/2 Why am I saying that? Well the devs are just gonna be lazy and not optimize or try maximizing the graphical fidelity on the base models. I understood the need for a ps4 pro and one x in the last generation, but rn no game comes close to pushing the base consoles to the limit
