“The Elite-Only Verification System Sucked”- After Elon Musk Faces Massive Criticism Over Blue Checkmarks, Epic Games CEO Expresses His Support for the Latest ‘Controversial’ Policies

Scrutinizing eyes followed each action made by Billionaire Elon Musk after he helmed Twitter. The micro-blogging platform went through dramatic changes after its massive acquisition. The latest point of discussion for the netizens is the Twitter Blue drama. Musk brought some dramatic changes to the platform after he became the CEO, and the most controversial one among them was the subscription-based checkmark system.

Countless people came in criticizing the decisions made by the new CEO. But there were supporters as well. Now as blue checkmarks transitioned into a full subscriber system, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games came expressing his support for this revolutionary change.

Epic Games CEO backs Elon Musk and Twitter’s latest policies

Elon Musk faced a lot of criticism for his latest Twitter changes. But, it has not stopped the billionaire to roll out the ideas he had in his mind. Amidst all these criticisms, Tim Sweeney is on Musk’s side. Epic Games’ CEO was a vocal critic of the policies that Twitter had prior to Musk’s acquisition.

Three years ago, Sweeney called out Twitter for playing favoritism. In his Tweet, Epic Games’ CEO stated that Twitter was dolling favors for their friends in regard to awarding blue checkmarks. Now, as Twitter made the verification badge monetary based, Sweeney came embracing the new concept.

He was seen addressing the people who were part of the #blocktheblue campaign. Sweeney points out that the old system and people embracing it are sort of bullies. “The elite-only verification system sucked, been criticizing it since 2018,” added the Epic Games CEO.

The 52-year-old went on to talk about the decline of meritocracy on the micro-blogging platform. That is, Twitter earlier had elements of a merit-based system, but it soon got replaced by a ‘noteworthy’ one. The platform allowed its staff to hand out the verification tags to anyone they wished.

This according to Sweeney was resembling the concept of favoritism, and he felt that many deserving figures did not get the fruits of verification badges. He went on to criticize Twitter’s old policy of removing checkmarks if someone stated something controversial. He argues that whatever speech an individual makes, their identity verification should not be subjugated on that basis, especially by a social platform.

Sweeney strongly believes that the old system of identity verification was strongly embedded in elitist concepts, where favoritism played a very vital role.

Thus, the new concept of subscription is considered better. Of course, not everyone will agree with these statements. The widespread criticisms against the latest policies are a key example of this. Sweeney went against the popular meme which mocked the people who bought Twitter Blue when it came out.

“That “this ** paid” meme is another facet of a disgusting pressure campaign trying to coerce people into joining their side by belittling their views on Twitter being a meritocracy once more,” expressed Sweeney. With time we can see whether these decisions turn out to be beneficial or a curse for Twitter.
