Nintendo recently released its much-awaited The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters.

The Japanese giant is really having a very good time these days. After all, they are riding high on the popularity of Mario – one of the most iconic gaming characters of all time. After the anticipated debut of his film globally, it has only reached an astronomical level now. This means fans can expect more new video game projects featuring the beloved plumber for various platforms.

Sadly, one specific platform will remain deprived of the next Mario game from Nintendo. Yes, that’s official news coming straight from none other than the reputed designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

Will the next Mario game from Nintendo arrive for mobile devices in the future?

The self-proclaimed ‘Mario’s mom’ recently had an interaction with a notable media outlet. While talking about the character, Mr. Miyamoto unveiled a surprising update regarding his gaming journey in the long run. Although he didn’t reveal where he will be seen next, he did specify where he won’t be: the mobile devices.

The iconic Nintendo game designer clearly stated that Mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games.” Continuing further, he said: “When we explored the opportunity of making Mario games for the mobile phone — which is a more common, generic device — it was changing to determine what that game should be.” Interestingly, there’s a big reason why the Japanese giant is not prioritizing smartphones for upcoming projects.

Following the moderate success of the past two games on the iOS App Store, and a failed project later, Nintendo has decided to pull Mario from the mobile market. In case someone is curious about the numbers, 2016’s Super Mario Run managed to make $60 million in its first year. On the other hand, 2019’s Mario Kart Tour earned a revenue of $300 million.

These numbers are nothing compared to Switch’s Mario Kart 8, which has grossed over $3 billion so far and it’s still performing great. So it was obvious for Nintendo to come to such a crucial decision. Especially when it comes to offering titles based on this beloved character on smartphones.
