Nothing seems to be going right for Call of Duty at the moment. The long-running action series is now facing another major problem amid the already existing issues related to its overall gameplay experience.
Undoubtedly, many COD lovers have ended up getting upset with the franchise by now. It’s happening due to the lack of engaging content in recent entries, including Modern Warfare II and its free-to-play extension in Warzone 2. In other words, players are getting bored with Activision’s IP. As a result, they are now actually considering other alternatives that can offer them a really good experience.
Interestingly, a potential rival seems to have made its way in at just the right time! Well, this game is called XDefiant, and it’s looking good so far, garnering great impressions. However, to really give tough competition to a brand like COD, it will have to overcome certain obstacles.

What’s the major issue with XDefiant that can prevent it from challenging Call of Duty?
XDefiant is an upcoming multiplayer arena shooter game from Ubisoft. For more than a year, it’s been going through closed beta tests with select users to get their feedback. And going by most of the reactions, the FPS title is looking solid, to say the least. Those who have tried it seem to be in awe of its gameplay and the rest of the mechanics. Especially when comparing it to Call of Duty.
While the game itself is looking to be a real competitor to Activision’s undisputed FPS king, there are some major problems lying ahead of XDefiant. Only if they succeed in fixing them, can one expect it to take on COD in a full-fledged manner.
As is already known, XDefiant is a property of Ubisoft. And the publisher has a negative reputation for ending its games quickly. One can look at its past projects like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Frontline to have an idea. The battle royale title was announced in 2021 but then got canceled before even getting an official launch. That’s the major concern some of the people from the gaming community are having right now.

XDefiant certainly seems like a fun game and is taking what Call of Duty fans want and implementing it. My only concern is it’s a Ubisoft game, and they have a history of dropping a game quickly. But, any competition for CoD is good.

In case Ubisoft decides to somehow stop giving attention to the upcoming title after launch, it won’t have a chance to even touch Call of Duty, let alone surpass it in terms of popularity in the long run. This is probably the one major hurdle XDefiant will have to cross and it can be only done by Ubisoft.
