MoistCr1TiKaL stumbled across a horrendous clone of ‘The Last of Us’ and decided to give it the glory it deserves online. Found on the Nintendo eShop as ‘The Last Hope – Dead Zone Survival,’ this game boldly appropriates assets like Ellie’s attire from the original. Despite copying textures and the lock-picking mechanism, the developers of this replica managed to throw some truly original, completely bonkers mechanics into the mix.

It all started when Cr1TiKaL found a trailer of the clone on YouTube trying too hard to sell the ‘epic’ feel of the game. Moist’s typical sardonicism kicked in on seeing the dilapidated character model, who is meant to be Joel from the original PS3 release. The shoddy look of the trailer was hilarious enough for Charlie to give the game a run.

Cr1TiKaL was unsure what he was in for after looking at the knockoff’s trailer. However, all doubts about the quality of the clone disappeared when the streamer booted up the game on his Switch. Page after page of the story’s setup popped up as text, and Charlie was slowly losing his mind trying to read it all. But this was only the beginning as the ripoff featured bad controls, ZERO cutscenes and dialogue, out-of-bound glitches, and the whole nine yards.

Taking an excessively exaggerated approach, ‘The Last Hope’ incorporates time travel tech allowing people to transfer their awareness into comatose bodies in the future. However, the catch is that a zombie epidemic plagues this future, converting 95% of the populace into terribly designed zombies.

Adding insult to injury was the outright loony stamina system. You can’t melee zombies in the clone without stamina. And the character has to load up on food to fill the bar up. “Can I use the bat? Not without eating a three-course meal,” commented Cr1TiKal after getting his hands on the game’s first melee weapon. The streamer swung the bat many, many times, hardly making contact with the enemies due to the atrocious controls.

“The fact Nintendo has no problem with this on their store yet sues anyone and everyone for copyright is hilarious to me,” said one comment under Moist’s video. Most comments along these lines were satire, but a few unhappy fans took the opportunity to criticize Nintendo’s game approval procedure for its online store.
