Team Fortress 2 is a first-person shooter game that originally came out in 2007. The game is a sequel to the 1996 Team Fortress mod for Quake and its 1999 remake, Team Fortress Classic. However, Valve and Steam have not been paying attention to the game regardless of thousands of players still playing it.
While the unofficial competitive scene remains active on the community servers, the in-game ranked matches take ages to find.
However, analyst Rod Breslau shared figures of active players on TF2 through a tweet. His intention was to point out how the game still has dedicated players. Therefore, the developers shouldn’t just roll out updates once in a blue moon. They should instead focus on keeping the community engaged by making regular changes to the game and keeping it interesting.

Major update takes Team Fortress 2 to its highest player peak since 2012
Valve released a major update for TF2 on October 1. It was the first major update they brought to the game in over a year. The update led to a total of 130,548 players logging into the game within 24 hours.
Team Fortress 2 reached its highest player peak ever (since 2012) with today's new major update from Valve, 13 years after release. the TF2 community is still very much alive, if only Valve would treat it as such pic.twitter.com/jYDzWZ17Ld

The data only goes back to 2012. Certainly, the number would have been much higher in the game’s initial few years. However, considering the game has been out for 13 years, these figures are much more promising than many of the games out there. It is evident that players are willing to play the game if it is updated frequently.

However, Valve’s neglect towards the game is certainly a sign of distress for most of the players. While there have been replies to this data calling it fake or botched, it does have an element of truth. Users have alleged that majority of these players are bots, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
sadly, a lot of those are bots. you can see a good estimate of actual players on servers here https://t.co/kNQy9D95Qr which shows theres about 25,000 real players currently on ingame servers

Everything aside, for now, players have a while to enjoy the newly added maps and the Halloween theme. The developers have added four new community maps along with a host of new changes. Players can access the update as soon as they log into the game.
