Nintendo beware, for Lego is right on your tail to take the soccer crown. For the uninitiated, Nintendo announced in the February 2022 Direct that it is bringing back the beloved franchise- Mario Strikers. The hotly anticipated title would see titular characters like Mario, Luigi, and DK duking it out in a no-holds-barred version of soccer.

Its spicy gameplay that incorporates items and special moves makes it one release fans are most looking forward to. However, in a stunning announcement, 2K has thrown its hat into that ring. The publisher would soon launch its own soccer title in partnership with Lego, and Zach from SwitchForce has his theories about how this could be the biggest competition Mario Strikers would have to overcome.

Nintendo takes on 2K in a soccer clash for the ages

The Japanese video game company unveiled Mario Strikers: Battle League in their February Nintendo Direct. The 5v5 soccer title emphasized it was ‘way heavy of offense’ as tackles, items, and special moves take center stage. Additionally, players can equip gear and use the exciting Hyper Strike mechanic to blaze their way to victory.

But Zach notes that the big story is 2K’s recent partnership with Lego for a series of sports games. This news comes courtesy of an exclusive report by VGC, revealing an upcoming Lego soccer game being developed by Sumo Digital.

Zach elaborates the games could feature guest characters from across the Lego games catalog. These include massive franchises like DC and Marvel! Accordingly, players could soon tear across the soccer field playing as Batman or Harry Potter. This could give Mario and Bowser a run for their money as the two titles vie for supremacy on the Switch. But would Lego soccer even be released for the console?

SwitchForce brings attention to how Lego has traditionally put all their video game offerings on the Nintendo Switch, noting that their entire franchise is on the platform. This gives wind to the possibility that the upcoming soccer title alongside the rest of the 2K published Lego games could end up on Switch.
