Strauss Zelnick’s take on the movie adaptation of Grand Theft Auto and RDR is pretty unique and reasonable. Rockstar Games has finally announced GTA 6. The hype for this game still knows no bounds; fans everywhere are just waiting for its first trailer to release with much eagerness. Red Dead Redemption, another one of Rockstar’s franchises, is no different.
RDR is as massive as its modern sibling and is as good at raking in numbers too. With almost every publisher turning their games into movies, fans must wonder: would Take-Two and Rockstar Games take the same route with GTA and RDR? It seems not, and for a good reason too.

Strauss Zelnick is a man who has been consistently taking Take Two higher and higher every few years. Specifically, when a new Rockstar game is introduced and released. One would think Strauss can sleep soundly at night thinking Rockstar Games is working on a new game, but it seems the guy is very competitive. He is always thinking of the next step and measuring it profoundly before taking it.
When he was asked recently if he would consider bringing GTA and Red Dead Redemption to the big screen, he denied it. He simply said, “Make no mistake about it. It is a very risky move, and I’m pretty risk-averse with regard to our intellectual property.” And his reason once again comes from his nature of thinking ahead. He says that the prospect of movies based on games seems exciting, and if they are successful, it can be a good thing, but if they fail, they can hurt the existing game franchises.

While the prospect of a movie based on the GTA franchise might sound exciting to some, it does not seem to be so good. The reason is that these are technically nothing but crime stories with a few twists and turns. Their translation into a movie would mean they would be nothing but a generic crime movie.

A Red Dead Redemption movie, on the other hand, has the potential to be something very special. Imagine a Western with an ironic twist. Stories like RDR and RDR 2 are seldom told, be it in gaming or movies. Then again, Zelnick wants neither.
