Nintendo has been making waves lately by relaunching some of its best-loved games and franchises, like Metroid Prime and Pikmin 1+2. Plus, they just announced Super Mario RPG is coming back too! But one of their most beloved franchises – F-Zero – has been noticeably absent from the list of relaunched titles.
In an interview with a retired Nintendo veteran, Takaya Imamura, the creator of some of the most iconic characters in the series – Captain Falcon, Fox McCloud – he talked about why F-Zero might not be coming back anytime soon.

According to Imamura, one of the reasons why F-Zero doesn’t get as much attention as other Nintendo games is because Mario Kart is so popular and successful. It’s probably Nintendo’s most famous racing game, and it’s got millions of people playing it all the time. The newest Mario Kart game, 8 Deluxe, has sold more than 53 million copies on the Switch so far.
Imamura says that Nintendo’s main goal from a business point of view is to keep and grow the Mario Kart series, which has been a constant hit.
The Costly Endeavor of F-Zero Revival
Imamura also talked about the financial issues that would come with bringing F-Zero back. It would take a lot of money to make a new game for the franchise, and it would need to use cutting-edge tech and game-changing mechanics. F-Zero is a sci-fi racing game with intense visuals and fast-paced gameplay, so a lot of money and time will be needed to make it happen. He says that the financial risks of F-Zero coming back, combined with Mario Kart’s success, make it less of a good idea for Nintendo.

Imamura pointed out another reason behind F-Zero’s absence. It’s no secret that Miyamoto is one of the most influential game developers in the company, and he has a special place in his heart for the Star Fox Series. He’s so passionate about Star Fox that Imamura thinks it might be why F-Zero hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.
