Call of Duty: Vanguard launched in November 2021, not too long ago. The game received positive reactions for its campaign mode as it was released alongside DICE’s Battlefield 2042. But just a few months later, Infinity Ward is ready with the announcement for its next Call of Duty title. As per rumors, the American studio has been working on Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to their 2019 title. Although the name remains unconfirmed, Infinity Ward recently put out a tweet making the news official.

Fans have mixed reactions to the announcement

It seems fans have grown tired of having the same old Call of Duty every year, albeit with a fresh coat of paint. Gamers met the post with heavy scrutiny online, with reactions ranging from doubtful to hopeless. Notably, it doesn’t bode well for the developers who already have their work cut out for them. The team’s recent entry into the franchise, 2019’s Modern Warfare left many players salty as they believed the game design encouraged issues like camping that plagued the multiplayer.

And it would seem the recent announcement has stirred up past memories.

It is not entirely speculation that leads people to believe IW’s next Call of Duty would fall victim to the same woes as its predecessor. On January 31, a user named Ralph sent out a tweet detailing an anonymous IW employee describing the gameplay of the upcoming CoD title. The employee stated that in terms of gameplay, MW 2 felt most similar to 2019’s Modern Warfare. In a statement that further rubbed people the wrong way, they said:

“I was not too happy with the gameplay, it looks incredible however”

Despite this, some fans have their fingers crossed for a game that would bring back their favorite things about the franchise.

According to a tweet by Chalie Intel, Activision had this to say regarding the upcoming iteration of the hit shooter series:

What’s Next?

Although the announcement has met with some serious consternation on Twitter, the developers of Infinity Ward have some serious pedigree. They’ve produced some smash successes in the past, like the original Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2. And with Vanguard failing to meet the Activisions expected sales (as per Business Wire), ultimately it falls to IW to make sure they deliver a hit.
