The gameplay reveal of Spider-Man 2 exhibited in the 2023 PlayStation Showcase left the fans in awe. The introduction of the Symbiote Suit and the battle with the army of Kraven left the fans wanting more, but there were clear deviations from the earlier entry of the series.

The sequel of Marvel’s Spider-Man had taken a rather darker tone for itself, which was evident in its gameplay reveal. Although it gives a more mature tone to the game, some fans want the return of the quippy and humorous superhero from the earlier version. A team from Insomniac Games came forward to reveal why they chose darker themes for the sequel.

Spider-Man 2’s creative director Bryan Intihar and game director Ryan Smith recently talked with Eurogamer about the upcoming sequel. In the gameplay reveal, fans saw Spider-Man flinging around enemies with outrage. The duo felt it was vital to present this aspect of Parker in order to depict the full impact of what the symbiote does.

Talking about incorporating his rage-filled actions, Intihar said, “That’s just being respectful to those characters, and what they bring to the overall experience.” This darker tone will also help them add a humane touch to the superheroes. Towards the end of the gameplay reveal, fans witnessed the effects of the symbiote on Spider-Man.

Parker refused to take any help from Morales and dashed off to face the enemies alone. Morales saying “You know, he’s never like that” for Spider-Man got the fans wondering what Insomniac has in store for them.

Intihar credited the creation of this dark storyline to the narrative team. “They do a great job,” Intihar said, “But, it’s very, very difficult. But that’s what we owe to the players. We owe that to them, to find that balance between these darker themes with the Symbiote and Kraven and Venom, and maybe others. But also, you know, to make people laugh.”

These comments from the creative director point out to the combination of lighter and darker tones fans could expect from the new title. Furthermore, his wording also hinted the game will have more characters to showcase darker themes. Maybe some villains from the previous titles may come back with a darker tone.
