The gaming industry leader, Sony’s PlayStation, was already having a glorious year so far. Having had a highly lucrative financial quarter, the company was riding high. But with a recent revelation, they added more success to the fruitful year with a record and setting a benchmark for the whole industry.

PlayStation has become the first-ever gaming home console manufacturer to sell over 500 million systems (this feat is only viable if we exclude handheld consoles of both Sony and the competitors). Over 30 years of dominating presence in the industry and five generations of home consoles are what made this feat a reality.

This observation was made on the forums of ResetEra by a user named Kolx. They said, “With the recent announcement of PS5 selling 6.3 million in the last quarter, PS home consoles now have broken the half a billion home consoles sold (so not including the PSP or the PS Vita), bringing the total to 500.5 million.”

The sales figure for each PlayStation console (generation-wise) stands like this:

  • PS: 102.5 million consoles sold
  • PS2: 155 million consoles sold
  • PS3: 87.4 million consoles sold
  • PS4: 117 million consoles sold
  • PS5: 38.4 million consoles sold (at the time of writing this article)

In the forum, fans poured out their love and praise for the console. “Congratulations to Sony. The road to a billion starts here!” predicting that PS may reach the billion console sales mark in the future. This may sound absurd, but most clearly, it is not an impossible task! With the rapidly growing industry and the increasing interest in the gaming medium, the future of PlayStation will only get brighter from here on.
