The Sony PlayStation 5 which was released in 2020 is back in the headlines. Being the latest version of the PS, fans are on the receiving end of one treat after another. From massive hits like Naughty Dog’s The Last of us 2 to Santa Monica’s God of War Ragnarok to the upcoming Insomniac’s Spiderman 2Sony continues to deliver.

The PS5 has many features like Remote play, Cross-generation multiplayer, and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). And the fans are loving it. They are undoubtedly looking forward to what’s next in store. While Sony is reportedly already working on a new patent, there is speculation of something further down the road. Should this come to fruition, it would be a massive step by Sony to enhance on the immersion of player’s senses.

Word around town is that Sony wants to enable users to smell video games? PlayStation gamers are no strangers to immersive game experiences. DUALSHOCK controllers have in-built motion sensors that detect motions like tilting and rotation. Controllers vibrate to give users feedback during moments like getting hit by an enemy, in-game hints, or button-mashing. Built-in speakers allow players to hear in-game sounds. Sony now looks to add a new immersive feature.

 

PlayStation rival, Xbox is offering fans pizza scented TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) controllers for a limited time. Now, Sony could be on the move.

Turns out that Sony has patented a feature like Smell-O-Vision. This feature would simulate in-game odors. The smell of copper as you hack and slash through your enemies, the smell of breeze across acres of farmland on a sunny morning, or swinging through New York City! The possibilities are endless! Interestingly, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard something like this in the world of gaming.

So what is this Smell-O-Vision?

Smell-O-Vision, as the term implies, means stimulating users with odors. According to wired, this concept was first used in cinema in 1960. It was later tried on television in 1965. Funnily enough, the latter instance turned out to be an April Fool’s prank. Interestingly, the concept can be traced back to 1916.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of this. Will this Smell-O-Vision like feature become a reality? How would it work? What are the possibilities? Surely Sony would love to make this happen. Likewise, fans will be eager to know more.
