Microsoft’s recent purchase of Activision Blizzard King has shaken the gaming industry to its core. Many had been seeing this move as a way to control one of the biggest video game franchises in the industry, but Microsoft succeeded in proving that claim wrong by expanding the reach of that franchise even more by promising Call of Duty for the Nintendo Switch too. Yet their Xbox Game Pass service saw a significant rise in subscribers, effectively raising Microsoft’s gaming revenue by close to 9%.

But it looks like PlayStation is not much affected by this either. Recently, while talking to Barrons.com, Sony executive Eric Lempel claimed around one-third of PlayStation players opt for the top two tiers of PlayStation Plus. For those unaware, Sony had announced three tiers for the PS Plus with the following pricing:

  • PS Plus Essential 12-month subscription: $79.99
  • Extra 12-month subscription: $134.99
  • Premium 12-month subscription: $159.99

The difference comes down to their offering the greatest number of games. The highest tier gives subscribers pretty much everything that the lower tiers have and more. He even had something interesting to say on this matter.

“It comes down to what you are going to get in the service in terms of the type of games and the quality of games.” This sure makes sense, and it’s sure good to see both companies doing better even though the market has become much more competitive than it ever was.

Sony also sees promise in the upcoming PlayStation 5 model.

The new PlayStation 5 was announced a while ago via a PlayStation blog. This new console, dubbed the PlayStation 5 Slim by many, is going to be released with a detachable Blu-ray drive, giving fans the option to opt for a disc-less version and buy the drive at a later date.
