Sega once was one of the biggest players in console games, and that was way before Sony PlayStation ever existed. Once PlayStation came into existence, Sega lost its market share and decided to become a third-party developer instead.

And ever since they shifted to just being a developer and publisher, insanely impressive IPs such as Yakuza: Like a Dragon, have appeared. And of course, Sonic the Hedgehog became multi-platform.

Now they have decided to expand their game library by buying one of the biggest mobile game developers of all time.

Sega finalizes the purchase of Angry Birds developer Rovio

Rovio made its name with only one IP, Angry Birds. Almost everything else they did beyond that came from the will to expand that IP. And that worked too, games like Bad Piggies and such appeared. While those games might not be as big as Angry Birds, they still did well enough.

There have been some rumors recently that Sega has been in talks with Rovio about a takeover. Some believed it and others did not. That hardly mattered though, because after a couple of days of this rumor coming out, the purchase has finally been finalized for an amount of $776 million according to gameindustry.biz.

If fans have learned anything from Sega’s track record till now, they should be ready to see a bunch of new RPGs, action games, and a bunch of crossovers starring the birds of Angry Birds in the video game. Maybe there’s a chance to see these quirky birds and pigs in a new Smash Bros. game now!

What about the movies though?

Angry Birds movies previously were not received very favorably; maybe in Sega’s hands, that would change. Sega surely did right by their Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in this case; those movies based on this character are pretty good for sure.
