Sonic Superstars is releasing soon and with the comeback of designer Ohshima one of the earliest designers and creators in the Sonic franchise. Takashi Lizuka, the chairperson of Sonic Team at SEGA told an interviewer at the Summer Game Fest that their initial plan was to work with the director of Sonic Mania 2017, developer Christian Whitehead. Due to the falling out of this plan, Ohshima was called for designing Sonic Superstars, twenty years almost after his initial collaboration with the Sonic Team.

Ohshima has been responsible for designing and developing many popular Sonic games in the nineties, such as Sonic the Hedgehog. His team, which is already popular for making Yoshi’s New Island or Hey! Pikmin will be cooperating to execute Ohshima’s imagination in this upcoming 2D game.

Takashi Lizuka, the boss of the Sonic team at Sega has announced that popular developers of Sonic Mania, Christian Whitehead along with Headcannon are not involved in the making of Sonic Superstars. Although Lizuka told the interviewer that they had a conversation with Whitehead asking for his suggestion on the next 2D game in the Sonic franchise while working on Sonic Mania. Despite some ideas conveyed to each other, they could not mutually agree on a concrete topic to begin with the work.

Takashi Lizuka confirms that he maintains a connection with old colleagues and that is when he approached Ohshima for collaboration in the future- He’s the original creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, and so we had a conversation about whether his company Arzest would be interested in working on a Sonic game. He clearly states that Sonic Superstars is a creation of Ohshima and his team Arzest. Although the entire Sonic Team is working on game elements and other creative designs for Ohshima, the game development is totally Ohshima’s work.

Lizuka was seen praising his former colleague Ohshima’s work– “A lot of people think Ohshima-san just came in and thought what Sonic would look like, drew the character and that was it. But he was also doing level design on Sonic 1 in addition to drawing and creating the character. So he has that experience of making a Sonic game because he did level design for the original game.” Lizuka further adds that he feels that only a few people are left in the industry of game developers who worked in the classic era.

Sonic Superstars is announced to release digitally and physically during the fall of 2023. It allows gamers to control any one of the characters of the game with an opportunity of co-support for four players at most. Jun is said to direct the music score for this game with a focus on bringing back the classic game sound. Sonic Superstars can be played on PlayStation 4, 5, Xbox series S/X, Xbox One, computer, and Switch. Fans are eagerly waiting to explore whether they can really see the touch of classic Sonic features in Sonic Superstars.
