When the Nintendo 3DS launched years ago, fans were wondering what games might make their way to that unique console. A dual-screen console with stereoscopic 3D support. A console with a stylus and a bunch of cameras that can be implemented in gameplay.

That’s when Nintendo asked Sakurai to develop a new title for that console. During his recent YouTube video, he explained how he went about making that game. A game based on Nintendo’s very exciting series called Kid Icarus.

Sakurai says that Nintendo DSi touch games inspired him. He talks about games like Pictionary, Nintendo, etc. He claims those games were part of something called the touch generation and were considered casual. Hence, he decided to create something for hardcore gamers using the same basic idea.

The 3D nature of the console inspired Sakurai to go with a third-person perspective. This was to give the game the feel of having more depth. He even claims that the fact that it would be a Kid Icarus game was decided way later.

Then he discusses how he decided to make it a third-person rail shooter thanks to the unique control options 3Ds offered. It’s interesting how Sakurai played such a huge part at Nintendo that the Japanese gaming giant allowed him to take these decisions without batting an eye. It’s good too; this is why he was able to give his fans one of the best shooters on that platform.
