Sega has been a constant force of nature in the console wars for its brilliant and innovative ideas. Even though it has been not in the headlines for quite a while now, it seems that one of its most popular IPs, Sonic the Hedgehog, is making great progress in the industry.

According to the Integrated Report by Sega for FY 2022, the prized possession by the developers has officially crossed 1.5 billion units in sales since it was first released in 1991.
Sonic the Hedgehog crossed 1.5 billion unit sales after three decades!
When first released in 1991, Sonic the hedgehog became an overnight sensation for its popular design and gameplay mechanics. As a fan, people were always speculating about what the game can bring more to the market, and over time it delivered more and more to the community.
And this has thus now brought us to 2022, where the game has now officially crossed 1.51 billion units in sales. This is also interesting to note that the last year’s Integrated report suggested that the game had crossed 1.38 billion units in sales, meaning the game has officially sold 130,000,000 in over a year.
It is also to be noted that the game has been making these sales not just in recent games, but also in all the other games that were released in the past. Therefore, making it is clear that the character still has the potential to bind a fan base even after so many years.

Although it’s been over 30 years since it was first released to the public, Sonic the Hedgehog has had some ups and downs over the years. But when this year Sonic the Hedgehog released its sequel for the first live-action movie, no one thought that it would be a global phenomenon.
According to Sega CEO Haruki Satomi, “Released worldwide in the spring of 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 broke the record for the highest-grossing video game-based film ever in the U.S., and met with high acclaim worldwide.”
