Japanese game development studio and stalwart of the industry, Sega is once again ready to break the internet. The gaming studio has churned a roster of amazing titles over time, including hallmark fighting franchise Yakuza. So far, the studio has produced 7 remarkable iterations of the franchise. The franchise was started back in the simpler days of PlayStation 2 in 2005.

Over the years, the franchise has grown into a phenomenon and it has also spawned a spinoff storyline with Lost Judgement.

The most recent entry in the world of Yakuza: Like a Dragon was released in 2020. This title proved to be an immensely entertaining addition and performed exceptionally in the market. Ever since, fans have been clamoring for a sequel, and it looks like it is finally about to the sequel might turn into reality soon.

Sega executive shed light on the possibility of Yakuza 8

According to a report by TheGamer, teams at Sega are looking into the possibility of yet another Yakuza title. The mega-successful launch and blistering sales figure of Like a Dragon has created a want for another iteration. In the last outing, the studio released a sequel to the spinoff series Lost Judgement and didn’t provide any further update regarding Yakuza.

However, in a recent conversation, the studio’s executive, Masayoshi Yokoyama spoke about the possibility of Yakuza 8.

“I can’t go into any details about Yakuza 8 yet, But I can reveal it will be a continuation of (Like a Dragon), set a few years later. We will also take great care over the Judgment series.  Beyond Judgment, we would love to tackle an all-new game as well, once the pieces are in place. In addition to both Yakuza and Judgment, we are working on other unannounced titles too.”

The next iteration of Like a Dragon will most like follow the same formula laid down by its predecessor. The title will both take place in the past and in the current year when the game is released.

This franchise is quite different from the spin-off, as it throws you into the shoes of a mafia, whereas Judgement sees you donning the role of a detective. Now that both franchises have achieved great success, it is likely that the studio will merge the two titles.
