The console wars are raging on and in no way running short of hostility. Both PlayStation and Xbox fans can vouch for the fact that their favorite console makers will stomp over any competition soon enough. Along with their consoles, these two also put a lot of resources into their cloud gaming services. The Xbox Game Pass and the PlayStation Plus offer a ton of titles through bundle packs against a nominal subscription fee. However, recently, Sony and PlayStation boss Jim Ryan kind of made his views about the Game Pass clear.

From Ryan’s statements, it’s not too difficult to figure out that maybe the SIE isn’t exactly fond of Microsoft’s cloud gaming services. While the Xbox Game Pass is one of the most-subscribed gaming services out there, Ryan doesn’t believe it adds much value for devs.

Both Sony and Microsoft have a plethora of offerings for their fans. Along with flagship consoles and gaming peripherals, they also have a strong stream of revenues coming from cloud gaming services. Only recently we learned that Microsoft relies heavily on its Xbox Game Pass. So much so, that Microsoft CEO Phil Spencer made it clear that the Game Pass subscription numbers will be the determining factor by 2027 on whether Micorosft remains in the gaming industry. However, Sony CEO Jim Ryan refuses to see its value.

Ryan was recently heard trying to find the justification behind Micorosft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. Ryan thinks the Game Pass didn’t prove to be a profitable venture, leading Microsoft to look for other areas to venture into. As a result, the acquisition becomes inevitable, claims Ryan.

Not only that, Ryan also had some thoughts on why the Xbox Game Pass didn’t yield enough revenues as Xbox hoped for. According to him, the Game Pass isn’t really popular among devs.

Sony Boss says Game Pass diminishes value

Jim also said that he got in touch with many publishers around the world. According to him, they all have claimed that the Xbox Game Pass is “value destructive“. And this destruction doesn’t end on an individual level, says Ryan. Rather, the whole industry takes a hit. He also said that Microsoft’s claims about its Game Pass subscription numbers don’t make a lot of sense to him either.

Ruan said he could not comprehend exactly how the Game Pass has 25 million subscribers when the PlayStation Plus boasts close to 50 million. Ryan thinks the PlayStation Plus offers a “meaningful subscription service“. We learned about the numbers only recently during the FTC-Microsoft trials. Like many others, we also wait eagerly to see which way things unfold in the coming days.
