Although this had made fans extremely hyped about the news, a question still intrigues some hardcore fans; do we really need a 2D Mario game anymore? As some may say it can be one of the best things Nintendo will do in a very long time for Mario, others feel that going back to 2D format back from 3D format is unnecessary.

A new 2D Mario game is in development?

According to popular leaker, Zippo, Nintendo might be working on the latest 2D Mario game that will be an individual game altogether. Along with this, it can also feature a new art style that will be totally different from any previous 2D Mario game.

And according to reports, the game is “very far” along in development and thus might soon be hinted at as a teaser or a trailer by Nintendo. It is also believed that the game will feature online multiplayer, most probably in Nintendo Switch Online subscription plan.

Do we need another 2D game for the plumber brothers?

All said and done, a question that arises in the community is, do we really need another 2D Mario game despite having so many more of the same genre? A YouTube channel by the name, RGT 85, also asked the same question and with some valid points.

He claimed that there are already enough 2D iterations for the game available for the fans. Super Mario Maker 2, which offers the ability to create any platformer and test fans, is one of these games.

Thus it feels almost pointless to have a 2D approach to the game, instead, a sequel for the Super Mario Odyssey might get much more preference from the fans. But it is still a leak and nothing official is said by the developers of the supposedly new 2D game.
