Microsoft’s Xbox has always been a successful enough platform for numerous game makers to bring their titles to this device. However, one third-party developer and publisher has always been a bit selective when it comes to bringing new games to these consoles.

Square Enix brings some games to Xbox consoles, while it completely refuses to bring others. Forspoken and Final Fantasy XVI are the latest examples of this. But a recent rumor suggests that Square Enix and Microsoft might be working on a way to change things for the better. Does this mean we will start seeing consistent Final Fantasy titles on Xbox?

Square Enix is a publisher that has its priorities pretty much set. They release different kinds of games, and they release those on different platforms exclusively. They made Octopath Traveler exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. They made a Final Fantasy VII Remake timed exclusive for PlayStation 4. And now they made Final Fantasy XVI timed exclusive for PlayStation 5.

Final Fantasy titles eventually made their way to PCs. Octopath Traveler eventually launched on every platform out there. Xbox is still waiting for a port of Final Fantasy VII Remake. A rumor suggests this selective exclusivity might change soon. Jez Corden himself has dropped some hints on Microsoft and Square Enix’s partnership.

He said in a recent podcast, “I was [initially] thinking it’s just going to be games like Octopath [Traveler 2], it’s going to be Pixel Remaster maybe, and Final Fantasy 14—I don’t think it’s going to be any of the heavy hitters like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth, Final Fantasy 16… But I’ve heard that it could actually be just full-blown everything. So, I’m hearing positive things about that, so stay tuned. It’s just going to take time because those games haven’t been in development, but now maybe they will be.”

This means Microsoft and Square Enix are combining forces to bring something big and new to Xbox. Here’s hoping it’s as good a title to justify the missing Final Fantasy XVI port.

What does it mean for other games on Microsoft’s console?

It’s good news that Microsoft and Square Enix are joining hands to build something massive and special in the future. However, one cannot help but wonder, what about those big Final Fantasy titles? What about not delaying games like Octopath Traveler II on Xbox?

Chances are fans would see those games coming to Xbox consoles too. Most of the above-mentioned games are usually timed exclusives. They are exclusive to their launch consoles for about a year or so and eventually start appearing on other platforms. If Microsoft plays its cards right, there’s much more in store for Xbox fans than just Final Fantasy 14.
