Arguably, the current participant who is leading the race is none other than Sony, all thanks to their PlayStation console.

The Sony PlayStation witnessed a record-breaking run during the holidays of 2022. The third Quarter (Q3) FY22 for Sony indicates that the company made a whopping $8.8 billion from just its PlayStation systems. The PlayStation 5 sales along with subscriptions, exclusive titles, and other gaming features have contributed to the console amassing such peak numbers.
Revenues aren't everything, though.

According to reports by TweakTown, the games and network revenues rose about 23% year after year. This indicates an increase of around $1.6 billion compared to the previous year.
The more highlighting factor in these increased incomes is that PlayStation’s financial numbers yet again have overtaken Xbox. TweakTown pointed out the drastic differences in revenues of both Xbox and PlayStation, which clearly point out the fact that the latter is financially overtaking the former in revenues.
Here's a quick comparison of Xbox vs PlayStation revenues for calendar year 2022.

This does not in any way indicate that Xbox has been doing poorly in its revenue. The console division has garnered about $15.5 billion throughout 2022. But unfortunately, these numbers fall short compared to the $24.4 billion that PlayStation made.
Microsoft vs Sony: the revenue race
In the past two years, that is 2021 and 2022, PlayStation has been outperforming Xbox in regard to the generated revenues. According to TweakTown, the former had around $8.32 billion in 2021. And in 2022 they witnessed an increase of around $535 million to take the tally of difference up to $8.85 billion.
But in the case of Xbox, they have been doing well considering the fact that Xbox has quite a low tally of first-party releases. They are able to generate billions without having these many exclusive titles compared to PlayStation which proudly can boast many major gaming titles.
