EA Sports is synonymous with the name FIFA. The American video game company has been developing FIFA titles for over 20 years, crafting the series into a colossal brand along the way. Significantly, EA Sports FIFA is one of the most prominent video game franchises of all time, creating sales records of its own. FIFA is the bestselling sports video game franchise in history.
However, despite the massive revenue, EA made a surprising announcement in October 2021. The company announced they were reviewing its agreement with FIFA, leading to surprising reactions from the fanbase. And according to a recent report, the company’s on the verge of rebranding its football franchise going forward.

EA considering rebranding the Fifa moniker
EA’s FIFA lineup of games is a colossal success. It’s considered by many to be the number one football simulation title around. Significantly, Forbes reported it had sold over 325 million units in lifetime sales as of 2021. This is further compounded by the individual sales of titles like FIFA 18, moving over 26 million units. These massive numbers add to its status as the highest-selling sports franchise.
However, in a shocking announcement by EA, Cam Weber revealed they were “exploring the idea of renaming our global EA SPORTS football games. This means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world.”
Furthermore, as reported by VGC, EA could already be on the cusp of that massive change. VGC quoted EA CEO Andrew Wilson saying “Basically, what we get from FIFA in a non-World Cup year is the four letters on the front of the box…”

Wilson emphasized elements like different modes of play, more relevant brand integrations, and a broader digital ecosystem as things EA wants to focus on. But their agreement with FIFA hampers those ambitions. Without that obstacle, they could bring new features and content to the series faster and generate more revenue while at it!
Additionally, they filed trademark applications for ‘EA Sports FC’ in UK and EU’s Intellectual Property Office in October. This could be the name of EA’s football titles in the future. Cam Weber noted they had 300 individual licensed partners whom they could work alongside to revamp their football franchise.
