PlayStation Showcase 2023 saw the launch of the trailer for the next installment in an iconic franchise. Square Enix is back with a franchise that has spun for decades with Final Fantasy XIV, the newest installment in the series. With the release coming fast, it seems developers at Square Enix have decided to reinvent the way Final Fantasy is played.
During an interview, Naoki Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 16, answered questions about the game that revealed a change in gameplay. The producer talked about the developers’ choice to go for a fully live-action game.

Final Fantasy, as a series, became famous for its infamous turn-based combat where players took turns fighting enemies. However, with Final Fantasy 16, developers have integrated a live-action combat system. This was a big surprise because it will be the first time the developers have worked in this genre of combat.
In the game, players will be able to control the protagonist Clive to combat enemies, where the combat is quick and players can experience high-speed fights. Square Enix understood the initial appeal of turn-based combat for older-generation fans.
To make the experience better for them, they added a system of “support accessories”. It serves as a form of a quick-time event. During a battle, if an enemy shoots at you, the game will offer a quick prompt that asks you to press a button to dodge, while slowing down time in the game. This allows you to experience the game without any difficulty from the new form of combat.
“For those who are not good at action games, it is equipped with an epoch-making system called “support accessories” that compensates for actions that they are not good at, while also enriching elements for core action gamers, making it fun for gamers of all generations. The feature is that you can have it. In the “Summoned Beast Battle” where giant summoned beasts collide, players can manipulate the summoned beasts with their hands and provide a de-class boss battle experience!” said Yoshida in the interview.

Recognizing that not everyone needs these support accessories, the game will offer a choice to enable or disable them while beginning the story mode. “If you select “Story Focus Mode” at the start of the game, they will be equipped from the beginning.”
Final Fantasy 16 to play like a movie
Yoshida later expanded on the way the Summoned Beast Battle experience functions. Using the hardware prowess of current generation consoles, summoning beasts can take place without a loading screen.
It will provide for a seamless transition between controlling Clive and the beast that it summoned. As a result, players may find resemblances similar to how an action movie would look and feel while playing the game!
