Sony’s PS5 has overtaken Nintendo Switch to become the top-selling console in the US based on total sales; both Sony and Nintendo are some of the top console providers in the world.
Last year, we got to see the new PS5 and Xbox Series X in all their glory. And now, a newly released report for September 2021 US video game sales has revealed that Sony’s PS5 has surpassed the Nintendo Switch in terms of pure sales.

The aforementioned report comes via the NPD Group, which states that for September 2021 US video game sales, the PlayStation 5 grabbed the first spot in terms of sales, dethroning the Nintendo Switch. The PS5 has broken the 33 month-long streak the Nintendo Switch had, and this is the first time since November 2018 that Nintendo Switch is not the top-selling console in the US in terms of total sales.
While the PS5 takes the first spot in September 2021 for US systems sold and dollar sales, the Nintendo Switch remains this year’s biggest console based on unit sales. The report further states that this year people have spent more on gaming hardware. Consumer spending on gaming hardware in September 2021 spiked by 49% to $412 million.

People have spent $3.4 billion on hardware for the current year, up by 49%. In the US, the total spending on gaming (including hardware, games, and accessories) for September this year has touched $4.4 billion, 3% higher, making a new record for September.
PS5 overtaking Nintendo Switch is really astounding considering the supply shortages and chip issues that have crushed supply chains. It is still not easy to buy the next-gen hardware even after almost a year since the PS5 debuted.
Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 controller was the top-selling accessory in September, reclaiming its spot in the gaming accessories department. At the same time, the PS5’s white DualSense controller continues to be the top-selling accessory of 2021 (so far).
