Nintendo, the Japanese gaming giant, has served the community a new DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The sheer amount of content that went into the DLC has put a smile on people’s faces, but the next Mario Kart game is still nowhere to be seen. But a recent leak by Nintendo Insider, Zippo, might finally change that.
This leak is the only actual piece of information fans have received for the upcoming Mario Kart in a while. Significantly, not only does Zippo provide information about the game, but also a potential release date.

Nintendo could give the Mario Kart franchise a soft reboot
Zippo starts out his report by explaining why they believe the upcoming MK 8 Deluxe DLC is simply a stop-gap measure. They liken it to Capcom’s attempts with the Street Fighter franchise. Street Fighter 5 found itself in a similar spot to Mario Kart. While fans were eager for the next installment in the franchise, Capcom prolonged the former’s life instead.
They did this via way of additional DLC as the team developed the next Street Fighter in the background. Zippo notes that a similar situation could be underway regarding the Mario Kart franchise. Nintendo’s Booster Course Pass might be a stop-gap until the next shiny new Mario Kart is ready.

ComicBook reports that Mario Kart X is the next Mario Kart title, as Nintendo potentially views Mario Kart Live Circuit as MK 9. Significantly, Zippo emphasizes that this title would serve as a soft reboot for the franchise.
Nintendo would keep the core gameplay mechanics; however, fans shouldn’t expect the game to feature retro tracks from across the series. In Zippo’s words, “Do not expect old courses to appear in the base game. The game will heavily lean into the crossover aspect, which includes characters, courses and items.”
