Sony is developing a new component to introduce to the console market, Project Q. Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO presented Project Q among the accessories that Sony intends to launch.

It is a handheld device that will allow PlayStation users to stream their PlayStation 5 games directly onto Project Q. It features an 8-inch HD Screen and “All of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller,” as Ryan would describe it.

Ryan revealed that users could stream any PlayStation 5 game they had on the handheld, with the exception of PlayStation VR games. The device makes use of WiFi, as well as PlayStation’s Remote Play feature.

New Fronts in Handheld Gaming

The introduction of Project Q seems to come at the right time for Sony, as the Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to release soon. A device that allows users to stream games built for the current generation of consoles while retaining most of the user experience is a big win for Sony.

Moreover, the introduction of Project Q marks the arrival of a dedicated device to stream PlayStation 5 games. With the last generation, the PlayStation Vita allowed users to stream games but featured a limited scope of doing so.

The launch of this new handheld console will be a new front for Sony to compete in. There are existing handheld consoles such as the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck, as well as the imminent arrival of Nintendo Switch 2.

Alongside the announcement of these devices, the event featured numerous games being announced, with the arrival of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 being the highlight of the event.
