Naughty Dog and their fans celebrated the ninth edition of The Last of Us Day this weekend. And the devs have delivered on their promise once again, announcing the return of a beloved game mode from last year to the PlayStation exclusive, along with new merch for the community.

Many fans believed Naughty Dog had announced everything about the event and that was all for this year. But they couldn’t be more wrong. Following The Last of Day live stream, the game’s director, Neil Druckmann, offered the first look at the upcoming The Last of Us HBO series.

In an interview with IGN earlier this year, Druckman revealed the series will revolve around Ellie and Joel’s journey rather than obsess over the similarities between the game and the series. He said, “As far as the superficial things, like should a character wear the same plaid shirt or the same red shirt? They might or might not appear in it; that’s way less important to us than getting the core of who these people are and the core of their journey,” as reported by Game Informer.

The series will focus on the happenings in the first game of The Last of Us franchise and will show the life of the two lead characters from a cinematic perspective.

The game’s director took to Twitter to express his excitement as he revealed the first teaser image for the upcoming series. Given it’s HBO who has taken upon the challenge to meet the expectation of The Last of Us community, it’s only fair the series has a star-studded line-up for the cast.
