So far, PlayStation has improved upon its collection of games for the PS5 compared to its predecessor. Most of these are typical first-party single-player games from Sony. While the next wave of PlayStation hits is arriving soon, Sony will continue to release PS4 versions of these games. This is because the last-gen console received a hike in demand as a result of the pandemic.
With PlayStation’s patented presentation, known as ‘State of Play’, set to take place on July 8th, the company will have kept some exciting announcements in store. We can surely expect to see more first-party single-player titles at the event. Herman Hulst, the Head of PlayStation Studios described this genre of games as “our DNA” in a blog post.
This week Insomniac Games, a member of the PlayStation Studios family, posted a tweet listing five new job openings. Insomniac Games does have a successful history when it comes to multiplayer titles. Sunset Overdrive, Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance all had accompanying multiplayer modes.

PlayStation to develop multiplayer titles alongside single-player games
In the job requirements for the systems designer, Insomniac Games has asked for people with experience in multiplayer titles. Thus, we could be seeing the developer revert to creating multiplayer modes for existing titles. This would not be foreign territory for PlayStation either as Uncharted 4 and Legends of Tsushima both featured this concept.

While PlayStation has made it clear that it wants to grow its multiplayer collection, it seems like this will be a separate project from the development of its single-player games. Sequels to The Last of Us, Horizon, and Spider-Man could very easily have downloadable multiplayer modes. This would extend the life of these games beyond that of the single-player story.
Sony recently acquired Finnish developer, Housemarque, for its development team. They recently worked on the breathtaking title Returnal and will be hoping to re-create similar hits for Sony.
