Video game engines are a big part of the game development process. One can even say that engines are the canvas on which the game is drawn. An engine is the basis of everything that is possible in a game and how it looks. Nowadays, every developer has their own in-house engine using which they develop their games. One such engine is Guerilla Game’s Decima engine. It powered big-budget games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, and Death Stranding for PlayStation and PC.
And if a recent rumor is to be believed, Sony has big plans for this excellent engine moving forward!

When Guerilla Games revealed Horizon Zero Dawn, people were only talking about how good that game looked. Once it was released, the water simulation and HDR implementation were the biggest highlights of that science fiction title.
Around the same time, legendary video game director Hideo Kojima was also looking for a game engine to develop his new IP. Sony gave him an open invitation to visit their studios and choose their tools to use for his new game. He visited Guerilla, saw Decima in action, and made an instant decision to use this engine for his next game. And that decision paid off too, Death Stranding can still be considered one of the best-looking games ever released.
Its environments were lifelike, and its character models were expressive; fans really loved how far Kojima pushed Decima. Then, years later, Guerilla set a new standard in visuals with the sequel to Zero Dawn. The game Forbidden West is still one of the best-looking PlayStation 5 titles.

And now, a recent rumor suggests that Sony might have some big plans for this engine in the coming years. For one, Kojima is once again using Decima to develop Death Stranding 2. Then comes the third installment in the Horizon series.
People noticed a post from Guerilla’s technical director, Michiel van der Leeuw, on LinkedIn. He mentioned he’ll be focusing on “our ambitious future plans for our own Decima engine.”

This is a pretty vague statement, but maybe the flexibility of this engine has made Sony confident enough to try some new things with it. It will be seen in the coming future exactly what those things are, though. Speculation is that fans might see a number of franchises made using Decima alone.
