The Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing series on PlayStation and has an enormous fanbase. Furthermore, several players were looking forward to the launch of the recent title in the series, Gran Turismo 7. Gran Turismo 7 was also receiving a lot of positive feedback back until developers added a few changes in the recent patch.

Version 1.07 lowered the in-game currency rewards, which caused a lot of controversy within the racing simulator’s community. Following this change, several users started criticizing the developers for promoting micro-transactions. The sudden changes in the currency rewards have led to widespread criticism from the games community.

At the time of writing, it commands a 2.5/10 User Score which appears to put it below every game in Metacritic’s 27-years of tracked games from PlayStation Studios.

Gran Turismo 7 earns Sony’s lowest user score on Metacritic

The recent developers’ move to reduce credit rewards has been viewed as a way of pushing real-life purchases onto customers. VGC reported that some of Gran Turismo 7’s cars cost as much as eight times what they did on Gran Turismo Sport, if purchased using real money.

According to one of Pushsquare’s blogs, “Criticism of the approach began on Gran Turismo 7’s release day of 4th March 2022, when a range of microtransactions went live alongside the game.”

“Currently, on the PS Store, you can buy up to 2,000,000 Credits for £15.99/$19.99. There are then other options like 250,000 Credits for £3.99/$4.99 and 750,000 Credits at £7.99/$9.99.”

One user commented, “Sony killed their longest running franchise in 2 weeks.” While another user replied,the new patch removed some rainy and fog effects to stable the frames.”

Lastly, another fan highlighted Sony’s current situation in his own words. The tweet read,” I understand Sony trying to maximize profits w OS since the other divisions are losing $. But this is just too much and was enabled by fans defending the price increases. I think Sony actually believed people wouldn’t mind.”
