PlayStation is, without a doubt, one of the most popular console brands of all time. To add onto the same, Sony’s console also bagged the 7th position in the top 10 in Prophet’s Brand Relevance Index of 2022. According to Sony, PlayStation managed to hop up 2 positions in the list within a year.

PlayStation’s success as a brand was most apparent after the release of Sony’s next-gen console, PlayStation 5. PS5 is extremely powerful, considering all the features it offers for developers to create their magic.

From an optimized new architecture to the presence of an SSD, PS5 is a huge upgrade from its predecessor, PS4. At the moment, fans are also expecting major hits to drop on PS5, namely God of War Ragnarök, Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy XVI, Hogwarts Legacy, and many more.

No wonder PS5 outsold PS4 in its launch year. However, the pandemic struck soon after, creating a supply shortage for parts. According to Sony, PS5 undersold PS4 in the second year, creating a gap that they plan to overcome by the current year.

The plan seems foolproof, as Sony has also reportedly arranged for some solutions to overcome the supply and logistics constraints.

PlayStation among the top relevant brands, Prophet reveals

If things go well and Sony is able to close the gap as promised, PlayStation has the potential to beat its competitors in the top global brands list. The 2022 Brand Relevance Index by Prophet also features major brands like Spotify, Apple, Android, Bose, Fitbit, and Ted. And PlayStation sits comfortably between Instant Pot and Fitbit, as of 2022.

It is also interesting to note that Xbox and Nintendo Switch don’t feature in the top 10 brands in terms of relevance. In fact, PlayStation (with PS5) has managed to outsell Xbox (with Xbox Series X|S) in the financial year 2021, as revealed by Ampere Analysis. PlayStation, with its powerful and versatile next-gen console, has managed to carve a niche for itself even in times of worry and instability in the hardware industry.

Then again, Nintendo Switch did enjoy more unit sales than the PS5 in 2021. However, the demand for PS5 is much more prominent – every kid in the colony wants one! If Sony indeed manages to bridge the gap by 2022, PS5 will still be facing Nintendo Switch as a fierce competitor. However, in terms of popularity, PlayStation still holds the ‘mighty’!

While Sony has beat its immediate competitors, the console giant also needs to consider other brands. This is as far as brand relevance is concerned. With Apple and Spotify sitting at their peaks, PlayStation will need to ‘up its game’ to surpass the ‘OG’ in brand relevance.
